Signs You Need to Replace your Punch Die

Power Punching Machines are one of the best inventions in our Industry. What’s not to love? It’s one machine which electrically punches the pages of a document, the dies can be switched out to do multiple different punching styles, you can have the bits in the die sharpened to work like new again and because of their all metal construction they last a really, really long time. However, there does come a point in ever die’s life where they need to retire. They’ve been oiled and sharpened so much, that there is nothing left. In order to get the most out of your time and your punch, it’s important to recognize the signs before your left with a big job, tight deadline and a tired die.

Signs You Die Might Need to be Replaced:

• Decrease in number of pages you can punch
• Holes have ragged edges
• Machine starts to become noisier during punching

  Keep in mind, these are also signs that your die needs to be lubricated. Oiling your dies is the best thing you can do to keep your dies performing like new. Depending on usage and what you are punching (thicker covers, plastic and laminates wear out the die quicker), you might have to oil your dies daily or weekly. You do have the option to replace single pins, or move the pins around as the ones on the left tend to see more action than the ones on the right. But eventually all great things must come to an end and replacing your die will save you hundreds in lost production costs versus keeping the old one.
