On April 6th, 2018 the Hockey Community and Canada as a Nation were shaken by the news that the Humboldt Broncos Junior Hockey Team were involved in an accident which forever changed the lives of so many families forever.
On April 12th, like many others across the Country, the team at Southwest Bindings joined in to wear Hockey Jerseys, Green & Gold to show our support for the town of Humboldt, the Humboldt Broncos and the families affected. However, our Prairie Assistant Branch Manager Roxanne Burns and her mother decided to take it one step further. Roxanne’s mother had heard a news report on the CBC about Humboldt’s Haus of Stitches owner Wendy Toye who was making and asking quilters across Canada to make a quilt to donate to those impacted. According to Wendy “In the quilting world, whenever there's a disaster, a fire or flood, something happens, that's what we do, is make quilts and send them to the victims.” She went on to say that “It’s just a natural thing to do, because quilts give comfort.” Roxanne’s mother originally asked if her daughter would donate some money to sponsor the quilt that she was going to do. But Roxanne decided to do one better and create her own for the cause (under her mother’s strict guidance).“She made me stitch and tear out so many squares. But low and behold - through her strong hand - I managed to complete my very first quilt!” Roxanne told owner Louis Cordeiro. She also mentioned that the original hope was to get 200 quilts and now they are anticipating 500 to come in.
Several lives and families were affected by the tragedy. Our society has shown great resolve in standing together in this hour of grief. We are so proud of Roxanne’s big heart and are very grateful to be able to work alongside wonderful people like her every day.
