7 Commonly Used Tab Divider Terms

Index Tabs, Copier Tabs, Litigation Tabs, Family Court Tabs, Quick Tabs, Deluxe Tabs, Minutebook Tabs and Tab Dividers. There are so many terms for these useful organization tools, but unless you know what they all mean, you could end up buying the wrong thing.

So here is a list of the 7 commonly used terms when referring to Tab Dividers.

• Cut 

  –Think of it as a puzzle, the tab cut would be how many puzzle pieces would be visible from the top to the bottom of the sheet of paper. For example, if you have a 5^th Cut tab that means that there are 5 tabs that can be visible from the right side of the page.

• Position

   – Position is where the tab would fit in that puzzle. Is it the 2^nd piece from the top or the 4^th? If you have tabs numbered #1-#10 on the side going from the top of the page down to the bottom (10^th cut), #5 would be the in the 5^th position.

• Bank 

  – Let’s go back to our example of the 10 tabs in 10^th You need tabs #1-#30, but you still want to only see 10 tabs at a time. In this case each set of 10 would be considered a bank. So #1-#10 would be the first bank, #11-#20 would be the second bank and #21-#30 would be the third bank.

• Single - When tabs are made, they are not made already going from 1-10 or A-Z, they are all made individually. If you just need certain numbers, letters or positions, then you would order them as singles or individually (you’re not going to buy #1-#10 if all you need is a #7). This way you will receive multiple tabs of the same position.

• Set - 

  If you need tabs already put together in numbers going in order or A-Z for example, than you would order them in a set. A set will give you one tab of each position in that bank, whether you are talking about letters, numbers or blank tabs.

• Reinforcing

  – Reinforcing by definition means to make something stronger. So by having a Tab with a reinforced spine, it means that your asking for a very thin plastic to be added to the left side of the paper to make that area stronger and more resistant to tears and rips.

• Mylar

  – Remember that thin piece of plastic we talked about above? Well there is a special type of plastic that can also be added to the tab extension itself called Mylar. When flipping a page, you tend to grab it by the tab, so adding this mylar makes the tab itself stronger so it does not rip or bend. Another advantage of mylar is that it comes in a wide range of colours. So it can also help you to quickly identify which section you are looking for in a large document just by seeing the mylar colour.
